Become a Biologist for a Day and Learn About Sea Turtles

Visit Jiquilisco Bay, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and join a group of biologists working with a nonprofit organization to conserve the endangered Hawksbill sea turtle.

Four species of sea turtles nest in El Salvador: Leatherback, Hawksbill, Olive Ridley, and Green turtles, all considered endangered. The group of biologists will provide an introductory talk about their conservation efforts. We will then head to the bay on a boat to witness the safe capture of an adult turtle for study. The information gathered is added to a database that provides valuable insights into this remarkable species. The research focuses on the Hawksbill turtle, wich recent estimates shows only 200 females remaining in the Eastern Pacific, and Jiquilisco Bay is their main nesting site. After studying the turtle, it is safely released back into the ocean.
