If you consider yourself a handsome man, you may want to think twice before swimming at the Lagoon of Alegria. Myths recite that a mermaid lives within the waters that fill the crater of Tecapa Volcano, and that she is very interested in handsome men; while swimming, she brings them underwater and drowns them.

Fortunately, you don´t need to swim in order to enjoy this beautiful place. The lagoon projects a bright green color due to sulfur and other minerals found at volcano craters. It is surrounded by deep vegetation and wildlife. In Nahuatl language, Tecapa means lagoon of stones, since you can see many rocks of all sizes and shapes around the lagoon.
